Ms. Lynn joined The Andy Griffith Show at the end of its first season in 1961. The episode featured Sheriff Andy Taylor playing matchmaker between Barney and Lynn’s character, Thelma Lou.

Lynn exited the series after Don Knott’s departed, even though she was given the opportunity to remain with a role as the owner of a hairdressing salon. But, Lynn declined.

“I didn’t think Thelma Lou made much sense,” Lynn said of her role without Barney.

Even though Betty Lynn only appeared in less than 30 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, she was easily one of the most recognizable and beloved characters during her acting years up until her death.
