She’s a native of Maces Spring, Virginia.
Born Valerie June Carter on June 23, 1929, June was introduced to country music – Appalachian folk songs, in particular – at a very young age. June’s mother, Maybelle Carter, was part of the popular trio called Carter Family.
Her first shot to fame was with her sisters.
When the Carter Family stopped recording together, the Carter matriarch formed Mother Maybelle and the Carter Sisters, along with June and her sisters Helen and Anita. In addition to singing, June also played the autoharp and rhythm guitar. But what’s even more remarkable is that she kept the audiences amused with her comedic wit.
The act toured and was featured on various radio and television programs. Later on, they became regulars at the Grand Ole Opry.
She was the first Carter to earn a Top 10 hit on the charts.
June made her solo debut at the Grand Ole Opry in 1950. And with such a wonderful voice and charming personality, June Carter Cash songs were immediately a hit.
She’s been married three times.
In 1952, June married her first husband, honky-tonk singer Carl Smith. The two were one of the genre’s most powerful couples at the time and would often perform at Grand Ole Opry together. Sadly, their marriage only lasted four years. After divorcing Smith, Carter was married to a Nashville policeman, Edwin Nix. However, after only eight years of marriage, the two would get divorced.
Soon, she met Johnny Cash, and their romance quickly progressed. They got hitched in 1968, less than two weeks following Cash’s public proposal to June after performing together. Today, they remained one of the most legendary couples in country music.
She often toured with Elvis Presley.
In fact, it was the King of Rock and Roll who introduced June to Cash.
She’s Hank Williams, Jr.’s godmother.
It’s no surprise that the son of country music legend Hank Williams was surrounded by several influential country artists since he was a child. “June Carter Cash was my godmother,” Hank Williams, Jr. said, adding that he and Cash even hunted Civil War artifacts all the time.
She has approved Reese Witherspoon to portray her.
The 2005 biographical musical romantic drama film Walk the Line tells Cash’s life story and his journey from a poor country boy to a country superstar. Witherspoon took home an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as June.
