Normal jealousy is a pang that comes on in an instant – especially if your lover is just so good-looking, you’re afraid somebody’s going to steal her away from you. Well, if that sounds familiar to you, you’re not alone. This is actually what “Suspicions” by Eddie Rabbitt is all about.
It was released as a single in 1979 off Rabbitt’s album Loveline. The song then reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. It also continued Rabbitt’s rise as a crossover artist as it peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Meanwhile, it also ranked No. 9 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart. The love ballad achieved the same success in Canada.
Story Behind The Song
Eddie Rabbitt wrote “Suspicions” with David Malloy, Even Stevens, and Randy McCormick.
In an interview, Stevens gave a glimpse of how the romantic song came to life. He recalled it being the last day of recording Rabbitt’s fifth studio album at Wally Heider’s studio in Los Angeles. And while they were on a break for lunch, the four of them found themselves writing a song instead of grabbing a bite.
Stevens noted that they had “Suspicions” in just twenty minutes.
Nearly three decades later, the song went back on the charts with Tim McGraw‘s cover version – which was released as a single off his album Let It Go. It reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.
Indeed, “Suspicions” is one of Eddie Rabbitt songs that stood the test of time. It tells the tale of a man who is head over heels in love with his girlfriend. But sneaking suspicion can be difficult to control. Though he knows he shouldn’t feel this way, he can’t help it as his lover has a beauty that’s hard to miss.
