Willie Nelson has not one, but two iconic nicknames. But while the moniker Red Headed Stranger has become especially famous thanks to Nelson’s 1975 album of the same name, the story behind the nickname Shotgun Willie is particularly memorable. According to Nelson, Shotgun Willie comes from a time when Nelson had protect his daughter and grandson from her abusive husband by (among other things) shooting out one of his tires. As the story goes, when the cops showed up, Nelson decided to tell them that his son-in-law drove over the bullet, and the story has since become stuff of legend.
